Mortality is particularly high for children under the age of 5 years, accounting for about 25% of childhood deaths in Africa. [1],[2],[3] Malaria is caused by different species of Plasmodium, of which Plasmodium falciparum is the most virulent human malarial parasite and others include Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale.
