Using the capability of the drive control electronics and microcode to effect head/disk clearance measurements, the power-saving reduced spindle speed can be adaptively controlled to optimize the low power velocity periodically to accommodate to environmental conditions to which the disk drive is exposed, as well as changing drive attributes occasioned by factors such as age, wear or shock.
