The development of the wave-molding machine in Germany in the late 16th century enabled this form of decoration to spread throughout Europe; it was particularly prominent in Austria and Switzerland, being seen on frames, cabinets and other furniture, and indeed interiors (e.g. in the Swiss Period Room; New York, Met.), where wave moldings were used to define the borders of panels.
