Using a conventional comedy form older than Bob Hope???s girdle and an actor whose scope has been defined mostly by the method of his one-liners, Martin Ritt, the director, and Walter Bernstein, the writer, have made a moving, haunted film, ???The Front??? makes no attempt to examine the ideological debris of those years.
