It was as a part of this program that Hopkins and his colleague William Matthews established the Bronx Park Employment program, which was one of the first public employment programs in the U.S. and one that was focused on urban renewal --- swimming pools, hospitals, airports, bridges, schools, parks, public buildings, golf courses, and other public infrastructure.
