Originally they meant fear, but then came to be used in contexts where fear is not possible, e.g. hydrophobic, meaning to repel or be repelled by water, acquired the general sense of repelled by or having an aversion to, and eventually became used for psychological states or belief systems characterized by a dislike or hatred of a particular grouping, attribute, or belief system.
