As the stylet's point is exceedingly sharp and as the peritoneum and other tissues provide a tough layer of tissue that may be difficult to penetrate, it is important to ensure that the force used on the stylet by the surgeon in order to pierce the abdominal wall does not continue once the peritoneum and adjoining tissues have been pierced.
