He really drives the entire book, and when I got to the end, I wanted to know more about him and what he did next. (I hope there is a sequel!) Also, I may have neglected to mention that the book is mostly set in space - Miles lives on a planet called Barrayar and visits several other planets during the course of the book - which gives the story an exotic feel, but never gets in the way of the plot.
