In many situations duckweeds would be a valuable resource to ensure that ruminants utilise these feeds effectively by providing a soluble N source (e.g. ammonia) needed by the cellulolytic organisms for protein synthesis and also a source of particularly P and S which are essential for microbial growth and therefore the animal (Preston & Leng, 1986).
