In vitro hydroxylation was determined with a reconstituted hydroxylase system consisting of AlkB (the membrane??bound catalytic monooxygenase component), AlkG (rubredoxin), and spinach ferredoxin reductase. van Beilen et al. (1994) found that this system was able to oxidize all types of substrates, except when a tertiary or quaternary carbon was present.
