As well as being flat parallel plates as shown in FIG. 6a, where the plates can be made of thin metal plates or of a plastic material, such as polyethylene or polypropylene which has a density lower than that of the liquid to be separated, so that they are buoyant, the surface-forming elements can also be made of other gap- or channel-forming elements, such as shown in FIGS. 6b-e.
