In this paper, we present data supporting a new hypothesis for how rocks crack: when factors such as preexisting weaknesses are excluded, an anomalously large fraction of cracks on the surfaces of exposed boulders in the southwestern deserts of the United States are aligned in an approximately north-south orientation.
