What began as a private ensemble commissioned by Alexander III in 1882 has grown into a showcase for pre-eminent Russian soloists (Sergei Prokofiev), fiery conductors (Richard Strauss), and the preferred performers of world premieres from such composers as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Dmitri Shostakovich.
