We used nonagenarians as the comparison group with adjustment for differences in the prevalence of congestive heart failure, neurologic diseases such as dementia and stroke, renal and hepatic diseases, obesity, anemia, malignancy, coagulopathy, and depression and other psychiatric illnesses.
