A number of conditions are associated with telogen effluvium (Table 2).19 Although stress is the most common underlying cause, the disorder also can develop because of normal physiologic events (e.g., lengthening of telogen in the postpartum state), some medications,20 and several endocrinopathies (thyroid, pituitary, and parathyroid disease).
