In my larger work, I do drawn attention to how new discourses of Kerala???s modernity have emerged, starting in the 1990s, in which Kerala is imagined less as a highly developed state that treats its women well to being understood as a consumer society riddled with social problems such as high suicide rates, fragile families and a place in which violence against women is increasing.
