He also loved literature and studied such authors as John Bunyan, William Shakespeare and John Ruskin and went on to appreciate many others like Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Lord Alfred Tennyson, who also became a friend.
