In the light of the radical transformations that have taken place in all of Europe, including the Netherlands, since the seventeenth century???the emergence of a more democratic social and political order, of a highly industrialized economy, and of a secular outlook on the world???the difference between the Dutch Republic and other European countries of its time might seem less conspicuous.
