The bacteria that causes diptheria can survive outside the body for days, allowing the disease to be transmitted in droplets of saliva and mucous blown into the air by coughs and sneezes as well as by contact with contaminated clothing, handkerchiefs, pens and pencils, and other objects long after they were handled by an infected individual.
