Herpes zoster, also referred to as shingles, is a condition caused when the varicella zoster virus (VZV) contracted earlier in life (usually as chicken pox) becomes reactivated after a period of latency.1 After the initial infection, VZV often lies asymptomatically within the ganglia of sensory cranial nerves and spinal dorsal roots.
