The medical co-morbidities commonly associated with smoking, such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes), occur at higher rates in patients with bipolar disorder and, as would be expected, at even higher rates in bipolar patients with SUDs, particularly nicotine dependence.
