KDE's goal is to provide an open source alternative to systems such as Microsoft Windows Vista and Apple Mac OS X. It now includes the Phonon framework, which provides platform independent multimedia support to all KDE applications, and the Solid framework, which allows applications to interact with portable devices and other hardware, such as networking and power management services.
