The zonal structure of the equatorial Pacific warming is potentially driven by several processes with compensating effects, including a cooling due to an increase in near-surface vertical thermal stratification that enhances upwelling in the eastern equatorial Pacific [e.g., Clement et al., 1996; Cane et al., 1997], an increase in cloud cover in the western equatorial Pacific [see DiNezio et al.,
