The Auteur Theory has always stated that as long as a director of a film has the most creative vision during the process, they are the auteur (French for author.) When the term was coined, directors such as Francois Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock were included in this elite group mostly because their vision of their movie was never hindered by the writing, or studio execs.
