Although adjustment for vitamin C, vitamin E, and other potentially protective substances in fruits and vegetables did not notably alter the association between -carotene and lung cancer, the fact that the inverse association between carrot intake and lung cancer incidence persisted after adjustment for intake of -carotene and ??-carotene supports the hypothesis that the association is probably du
