After 1807 when U.S. law outlawed the importation of African slaves, the British navy aggressively intercepted slave ships off the coasts of Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissaou Sierra Leone, and Liberia, tending to push the focus of slave trade further south, toward regions such as the Congo and Angola.
