Nicolai, quoted in Acta Latamorum, asserts that in Italy are several churches formerly belonging to the Templars, which have preserved the name l'eglise de la Mason, as derived from the table Masa, a club, that is tyled by a Mace or club; but Paciandi considers the derivation to be from Magione, as the places were used for residences; there are some such in France as well as Italy.
