Well, aside from the exceedingly numerous client states (proxy states) maintained by the United States through the Cold War, especially in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East (the question of why we used them as proxy states is immaterial), we could name Iraq and, on good days, Afghanistan as very obvious examples today.
