About 25% of patients with what has been termed the olfactory reference syndrome [87,88,89,90] reported perception of a foul odor emanating from a body orifice other than nose or mouth or on occasion from the body as a whole (e.g., skin) unrelieved by any maneuver to remove the odor such as a cleaning procedure; this syndrome is characterized by this fixed, monosymptomatic odor.
