Somerset Maugham's `sunny place for shady people' was born in the 1920s when post-war tax exiles and cash-rich Americans built elegant villas along the coast, and artists including Chagall, Signac, Matisse, Renoir, Picasso and Bonnard were attracted to the region for its soft light, vivid colours and beautiful coastal scenery.
