Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and her coworkers (1999) then taught a pygmy chimpanzee named Malatta a symbolic language called Yerkish. (The pygmy chimpanzee, or bonobo, is a species thought to be an even closer relative of humans than the common chimp.) Malatta and her son Kanzi were caught in the wild, and Kanzi accompanied his mother to class.
