Catastrophic thresholds are of tremendous relevance to ecology and ecosystem management because they signify the occurrence of substantial and potentially irreversible change that may variously affect patterns and processes, including their capacity to provision services upon which human societies depend (Gunderson 2000, Scheffer and Carpenter 2003).
