Across the inter-war years, there was some growth in preservationist activity, as the National Trust and the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments were joined by the Council for the Preservation of Rural England and the Georgian Group; and during the same period, writers such as G. M. Trevelyan, Lytton Strachey, John Buchan and Winston Churchill reached a large public audience.
