High blood pressure is much more common among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples than non-Indigenous people, and is one of the reasons heart attacks, strokes and other circulatory diseases are much more common, and cause many more early deaths, among Indigenous Australians (AIHW 2002a).
