The idea of applying Darwinian principles to social phenomena, without reducing them to biology, was taken up by a host of social theorists and philosophers, including Walter Bagehot, William James, Benjamin Kidd, David Ritchie, Thorstein Veblen and Albert Keller, and more recently by V. Gordon Childe, Donald Campbell and Richard Dawkins.
