When a substrate, such as steel, having a microstructure coating comprising nanometer-size crystallites (e.g., aluminum nitride) is exposed to an oxygen containing environment (e.g., water, blood), a chemical reaction occurs converting the surface of nanocrystallite to a hydroxide (e.g., aluminum hydroxide).
